Filey History

Filey Coble Landing is a cobbled and concrete structure at the north end of Filey beach.  It has historically dated back to the roman times in the late 4th Century when Filey brigg was used as a safe harbour. Since this time until recently the local fishing trade had thrived.

However, tourism has now taken the forefront and the Landing is now used for a mixture of commercial fishing, passenger vessels, pleasure craft and tourist arcades and cafes along with the longstanding RNLI station operating between Gristhorpe and Flamborough Head.

The landing is also the main place to launch day boats in the area, down the Landings slipway.

The landing currently has 24 leisure craft and passenger craft storage areas either side of the roadway on the landing and 7 traditional commercial fishing cobles that launch and recover from the beach by tractor.

There is a parking order on the landing which only permits berth holders, designated business users and the RNLI to park due to high volumes of visitors illegally parking and blocking the landing for the launch of the RNLI vessel.

All administration for Filey Coble Landing is dealt with by Scarborough Harbour Office.

The History of Filey

Filey's name means Five Leys meaning a clearing of forest or meadow.

For much of its 1200-year history, Filey was a small, remote fishing and farming village.  It remained so until the 18th Century when visitors first began to visit for the peace and quiet not found in the bustling resort of Scarborough.

The first visitors to Filey stayed in the local resident’s houses. The first house to be built with tourists in mind was Foord’s Hotel in the early part of the 19th Century.

In 1835 a Birmingham solicitor called John Wilkes Unett bought 7 acres of land and built the Crescent, later known as the Royal Crescent. It was opened in the 1850s and for 100 years it was the most fashionable address in the North of England.

During the Victorian and the Edwardian eras, musicians played in the gardens in Filey. This continued well into the 1950s and has recently been revived by the Town Council, who invite silver and brass bands to play on a Sunday afternoon.

You can find out more about the colourful history of Filey by paying a visit to the local museum. Delve into the past and experience recreations of rural life, covering all aspects of Filey's past and present.
