Whitby - Dredging
Dredger in Whitby Harbour

Whitby Harbour has its own dredging system comprising of the split hopper barge ‘Sandsend’ and back hoe excavating pontoon ‘Saltwick’.

The ‘Sandsend’ was converted from a dumb barge in 2003 and the ‘Saltwick’ was built to an original specification in 1993.

The excavating pontoon was the first of its kind and allowed dredging in areas of limited depths.

Dredger Specifications

Depths

The Dredging system maintains the depths of the channels and harbours at Whitby and Scarborough. The channel depth within Whitby is maintained where possible at a depth of 1.4 metres below chart datum.

Depths on private moorings are maintained where possible at the following depths – however these cannot be guaranteed due to occasional rapid silting (all depths are below chart datum):

Private moorings on pontoons below Spital Bridge: 1.5 metres
Eskside Wharf: 1.5 metres
Endeavour Wharf: 2 metres
Fish Quay: 2 metres

Soundings are taken and recorded annually, with additional soundings taken as and when required.

Hire of System

The system is available for external contract work when spare capacity is available. Please contact Capt Willis if you are interested in hiring the system.
