Port Services maintains a licensed passenger craft and boatman licensing system as agents of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency under the nominated departure point code.
Pleasure boats wishing to take passengers must undergo survey and be operated by a suitably qualified and licensed boatman.
Licences will be granted under the Red Code for vessels wishing to nominate a specific departure point and are valid for five years subject to restrictions.
There are two categories of Red Code available:
Category 5 with a limit of 20 miles from the Nominated Departure Point Category 6 with a limit of 3 miles from the Nominated Departure Point
Vessels licensed under this scheme can only operate in favourable weather and in daylight from the nominated departure point.
The Yellow Code will permit a vessel to operate from any UK port and can only be granted by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
This can be obtained from The Stationary Office on 0870 600 5522.
