The strategy has been developed to recognise the importance of the Ports, not only in terms of their heritage, but also as a key driver for the future economic well-being and regeneration of the area.

Reduction in Landing Dues for Fishing Vessels
16 March 2007
All Fishing Vessels -
As part of our current strategy to encourage fishing vessels to use the ports of Whitby and Scarborough it has been agreed that the ad valorem landing charge on nephrops will be reduced to 2%.
A prolific prawn fishery off the Yorkshire Coast is regularly visited by a fleet of fishing vessels. It is hoped that these vessels will note the reduction in charges and use the ports of Whitby and Scarborough to land their products.
Local Fishing Vessels -
As well as the reduction in nephrop ad valorem landing charges local fishing vessels from either Whitby or Scarborough will be able to land their fishery products in either port and provided the landing is of a reasonable quality and their annual charges are paid, may remain in port for a maximum of 48 hours without further harbour dues being levied.
The quantity of fish products landed must be relative to the size capability of the vessel involved and normal ad valorem charges will be applicable. This incentive for local vessel has been agree with Cllr Christon, Portfolio Holder for Harbours on a 12 month trial basis starting 1 April 2007.
