The Borough Council is a second tier Authority established in 1974. It has a peripheral location on the East Coast of Yorkshire. Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are the key towns and the large areas are National Park and Heritage Coast.
The environment of the area has provided the basis for a successful tourist economy and generally a high quality of life for residents.
